I don't like eating fruit and vegetables so have started making my own smoothies and now have 3 or them a day if I can.

A healthy lifestyle for me is a combination of eating fresh fruits and vegetables everyday along with exercise. I am not a huge legume fan-but this past fall have been making recipes with ingredients i like to try something new and healthy.

For a healthy lifestyle, I am big on watching what I eat. And make substitutions for the stuff that I know are not healthy for me. Like turkey bacon for pork bacon, and gingersnap cookies, instead of fatty desserts.

We try to have the veggies and fruit called for. My husband's father was a diabetic who was older when diagnosed. My husband is very aware of the fact that it runs in his family and well I watch what I eat as well because of a health issue (DVT).

I put the focus on food. I've completely cut out soda and juice, limit myself to one cup of coffee per day, drink LOTS of water and very little alcohol. I try to eat a well-balanced diet with emphasis on the fruits & veggies, and have cut back on meat. Sadly, I'm lousy at exercising on a regular basis.

I am definitely a believer in the "everything in moderation" rule of thumb. I think eating based on points (like a certain weight watching program requires) would just stress me out. I want to enjoy my food, but I try to be smart about it. If I have pork belly one night, then I might have fish w/ brown rice & broccoli the next. I like wine, beer and cocktails, I just try not to get too toasty. One thing I rely on though is running and working out. I really enjoy running and triathlons, so I think I keep myself in pretty good shape. When I run 10 miles, I definitely don't fret about having a cupcake for dessert. I love to eat, so I would much rather run an extra mile than restrict my calories. I am also a teacher, so I spend my a lot of days on my feet, which helps the whole calorie burn thing too.

I am really looking forward to reading this book!
