seattleResidence of Seattle will now be able to add food to their new Food and Yard Waste collection carts. Starting on March 30, residence will be able to send food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste in their new collection boxes. The city is mandating this new recycling effort for those who aren’t already composting at home.

The new recycling bins can collect food scraps consisting of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, chicken, diary, shells and bones, coffee grounds and their filters as well as soiled paper products like paper towels, plates, pizza boxes, paper bags with food scraps in them and approved compostable tableware.

Food scraps can account for up to a 1/3 of landfill waste. This new recycling effort will send the scraps and yard waste to composting facilities in the state.
