Continuing on my Sunday quest for places that use sustainable food sources or that are organic in nature, my next stop was Mäni’s on Fairfax. Mäni’s is a bakery and a restaurant located on Fairfax between 3rd and 6th near The Grove and the LA Farmers’ Market. Mäni’s bakery features items free of additives, preservatives, hormones and artificial sweeteners.

My friends Aaron and Davey came along and we ordered several muffins and a cookie to sample. I opted for the Morning Glory Muffin, a High Protien Muffin, a Blueberry Coffee Cake Muffin and a chocolate cookie.

The Morning Glory Muffin is a Vegan muffin made with carrots, raisins, pecans and apples. They use fruit juice to sweeten the muffin wish a dash of cinnamon. The muffin had good flavor, but it was a bit dense for me. 2 hours later, I was still feeling its presence.

Next up is the High Protien Muffin. For what it’s made of, it was actually not dense. Made with oat bran flour, sesame seeds, flax and pumpkin seeds, granola, coconut and also sweetened with fruit juice.  I’d have this again.

The Blueberry Coffeecake Muffin looked like it was going to be my favorite, but oddly for me, the High Protein Muffin won out. The coffeecake Muffin is make with ogranic wheat flour, blueberries and has an organic evaporated can juice topping. Interesting eh?

The chocolate cookie was the worse item of all. I’m not sure if it was the fact that it was made with wheat flour or a combination that it was refrigerated. the cookie crumbled to the couch. The coldness from the fridge also made the chocolate chips hard to bite into. It didn’t really have any flavor either. Fail.

Mäni’s is more than just their baked goods. They have a seating area with servers and they offer everything from breakfast to salads to burgers. Everything they make is made with fresh ingredients and organic. They even feature gluten or wheat free offerings and many dishes can be made vegetarian or vegan as well. 

They also offer outdoor seating with gas heat lamps – perfect for those chilling mornings. I’d give this place a 2.5 stars…but I don’t have 1/2 forks! I will visit Mäni’s again for something more savory and see if they get a higher rating then. Until then, 2.5 forks for me.
